A “machan” is an elevated platform that is used as a watchtower, giving the person on top a clear and distant view all around the area. Machans can be seen in numerous farmlands across India, especially those agricultural areas that border the forests. They offer villagers a good viewpoint from which to protect their crops from wildlife attacks during the night.
