A “machan” is an elevated platform that is used as a watchtower, giving the person on top a clear and distant view all around the area. Machans can be seen in numerous farmlands across India, especially those agricultural areas that border the forests. They offer villagers a good viewpoint from which to protect their crops from wildlife attacks during the night.
For our travellers wanting to experience the thrill of sleeping out in the open on a machan, Jamtara Wilderness Camp offers a wonderful overnight “starbed” experience. Not only is the stargazing sublime, but the live orchestra of insect songs and spotted deer alarm calls make this nocturnal experience all the more authentic.
