A unique blend of wildlife encounters, natural beauty, and cultural experiences

Jawai has recently drawn attention as the best place to see the otherwise elusive Indian Leopard in it’s natural habitat.  It also offers a glimpse into the traditional rural life of Rajasthan where you can experience the culture, hospitality, and traditions of the local Rabari community. You will witness the co-existence of wildlife and the local communities as the tribesman that inhabit the villages recognise the importance of thriving wildlife, embedding a strong conservation model that has become an inspiration for the rest of the country.

Overview

Jawai is known for its dramatic granite hills and rocky outcrops, often referred to as “kopjes.” These rocky formations create a rugged and picturesque terrain that is unlike many other parts of Rajasthan. These hills are not only visually stunning but also serve as an ideal habitat for wildlife, particularly leopards, who find shelter and vantage points among the rocks.

Best time to go

November to March – Dry Cool Season

The dry and cool season from November – March is the best time to visit Jawai. Days are pleasant and nights are cold. Early morning drives can be chilly until the first hour of sunlight. December and January are the coldest months of the year.

March/April is the flowering season with Butea Monosperma (Flame of the Forest or Palash) in full bloom. This is also the time for Holi in India, an important festival marking the onset of spring.

The green season from September to November is a good time to visit as the dam will be fully up to the brink. The overall arid landscape gets pockets of greens between the boulders.

The striking and contrasting elements of the Jawai landscape, from the rugged granite hills to the serene reservoir, create a unique and visually captivating environment. It’s a place where visitors can experience the beauty of the natural world while also gaining insights into the local way of life and culture in rural Rajasthan. Wildlife safaris and tours in Jawai offer opportunities to explore this landscape and its rich biodiversity.
